Position: Pharmacy Resident
Employer: Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) Pharmacy Practice (PGY-1) - a fully ASHP accredited Pharmacy Residency Program.
Description: The program takes seven residents each year. Core Rotations include Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Practice Management and Ambulatory Care. There are many electives including Critical Care/TPN, Cardiology, HIV, Geriatrics, Spinal Cord Injury, Hematology/Oncology, Drug Information, Research, Transplant Service (MEDVAMC has a liver/kidney transplant program), Nursing home, and academic pharmacy school. MEDVAMC has a sharing agreement with the world famous MD Anderson Hospital and The Methodist Hospital (private 1000 bed hospital) and residents can choose to do some electives at those hospitals.
As a member of one of the world's largest integrated health care systems, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) serves as the primary health care provider for more than 103,000 veterans in southeast Texas. MEDVAMC logged over 900,000 outpatient visits in fiscal year 2004. This includes the satellite clinics in Lufkin , Beaumont , Conroe , Katy , Texas City and Galveston , providing care to veterans outside of Houston .
For more than 50 years, MEDVAMC staff has provided clinical training for health care professionals through affiliations with the Baylor College of Medicine and 85 other educational and research institutions. Hundreds of health care students from fields such as pharmacy, nursing, dietetics, social work, and physical therapy receive training at MEDVAMC each year. Three pharmacy schools ( University of Texas , University of Houston and Texas Southern University) send 4 th year students to this hospital and our clinical pharmacy staff serve as preceptors. All of our clinical pharmacy preceptors have faculty appointments to these schools of pharmacy and some have clinical faculty appointments to Baylor College of Medicine.
MEDVAMC is located on a 118-acre campus and built in 1991, MEDVAMC is a state-of-the-art facility with 452 hospital beds, a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center , and a 120-bed transitional care center for long-term care. The transitional care unit includes five palliative care beds. An automated, computer-controlled transport system delivers food, laundry, and supplies throughout the building. MEDVAMC also uses robotic helpmates that transport medications and supplies from the pharmacy to various nursing units within the hospital.
The Pharmacy Service is progressive and growing. It includes 21 Clinical Pharmacy Specialists and 85 staff pharmacist who provide pharmacy services in a variety of specialty areas. There is ample opportunity for clinical pharmacists to develop innovative and advanced patient care practices in collaboration with the medical staff at this federal facility.
