PDF Files

PDF is an acronym for Portable Document Format and is a relatively open format created by Adobe. Its main draw is its universal compatibility between computers and its ability to retain layout and format. If you've been on the internet, you've probably encountered a PDF file at one point or another. For more information, check here.

Reading PDF files

To read a PDF file, you will need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader... or Adobe Reader for short. If you don't already have this program on your system you can download it from Adobe's Website using the link below.

Download Adobe Reader

You won't need the "Photoshop Album Starter Edition" download, so be sure to uncheck it before clicking the download button (unless you want it).

Creating PDF files

There are various options available to create a PDF in Windows. While most of them cost a decent amount of money, a free option is available in the form of CutePDF Writer by Acro Software.

Installation

  1. Download the PDF software here using the "Free Download" link on the left side.
  2. Once downloaded, double click on the icon to install the CutePDF software.
  3. During the installation, CutePDF will ask if you want to install a converter as well. This is necessary for the operation of CutePDF so you will need to click 'Yes'. The installation program should download and install the free converter if you are connected to the internet.
  4. That's it! You should now be able to create PDFs from any program that can print.

'Printing' to a PDF

select the CutePDF Writer option from your print menu.
Choosing a printer.
  1. CutePDF essentially installs a virtual printer on your computer, so creating a PDF is very much like printing on a normal printer. Just choose File > Print from any program.
  2. From your list of printers, choose the new CutePDF Writer 'printer' and set any other options you may want (page range, layout, etc.).
  3. Click Print when ready. A Save As... dialog will appear asking you to name and pick a location for your new PDF file.
  4. Congratulations, you have just made a PDF file using CutePDF and spending almost no money.
