Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) Program Overview

The undergraduate program in pharmaceutical sciences provides students with an introduction to the major areas of the pharmaceutical sciences as well as a general education. The pharmacy component consists of a total of 39 credit hours as follows: 19 credit hours from 6 required pharmacy courses in basic pharmaceutical sciences, 4 credit hours from 2 required laboratory courses to be chosen from four different offerings, and 16 elective credit hours (chosen from 13 courses and individual research - approximately 32 available hours). The program currently has more than 450 students and is growing.

What are the Pharmaceutical Sciences?

The Pharmaceutical Sciences are made up of the following disciplines: medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics, pharmacology and toxicology, and pharmaceutical administration.  The students in the Bachelor of Science in the Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) will study the exciting areas of drug discovery, drug delivery, drug action, drug distribution and pharmacoeconomics.  This undergraduate program at The Ohio State University is a four year curriculum which will help build a strong science foundation, develop essential laboratory skills, and provide the experience and training necessary for graduate education, graduate professional education, or a health-related career. Graduates of this program have gained preparation to enroll in higher education programs across the country within such areas as Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Business, and Law - to name a few.

Never before have pharmaceuticals been such an important component of the health care system and the economy.  New discoveries are being made at an astonishing rate, and medications are now the standard business, generating billions of dollars, demanding top researchers and professionals in marketing, economics, regulations, and clinical affairs.

Career Opportunities in the Pharmaceutical Sciences

Graduates of the BSPS program will be prepared for graduate education, graduate professional education, or a health-related career. The pharmaceutical industry offers career opportunities in sales and marketing, drug research and development, quality assurance and professional services.

High School Preparation

All freshman applications are considered within a competitive admission process for Summer, Autumn and Winter quarters for the Columbus campus. The primary criteria for admission are the completion of the applicant's high school college preparatory program, performance in that program as indicated by class rank and/or grade-point average, and performance on either the ACT or SAT.

In order to major in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, students must apply to and be accepted to OSU as an undergraduate student. Students may directly enroll in this major from high school if they have an ACT composite of at least 25 and rank in the top 25% of their class. Students may also request a transfer* into the program after completing the necessary prerequisites:

* Students transferring after June 15, 2008 must use the current curriculum checklist. Contact an academic advisor for details.

The BSPS is an undergraduate major which is intended as preparation for graduate studies in the Pharmaceutical sciences, graduate professional studies (e.g. Doctor of Pharmacy or Doctor of Medicine), or entry-level employment in the pharmaceutical industry.

The BSPS is a non-licensable undergraduate major; you cannot become a pharmacist after completing only this degree. The College of Pharmacy's entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) is a four-year graduate professional program.  Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree.  Applicants are not required to have prior pharmacy education; any undergraduate major is acceptable as long as prerequisites are met.  For more information contact the College of Pharmacy.
