Meet the Researcher: Chenglong Li, Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy
Chenglong Li, PhD
Associate Professor, Division of Medicinal Chemistry & Pharmacognosy
Additional appointments in the Biophysics Program, Biochemistry Program, Chemical Physics Program, Biomedical Engineering, and OSUCCC Experimental Therapeutics.
What is your area of study?
I study Medicinal Chemistry, Molecular Biophysics, Biochemistry, Computational Chemistry, and Drug Design and Discovery.
How long have you been at Ohio State?
I have been at Ohio State for eight years.
What is your focus of research?
My focus is to understand how molecules “recognize” each other to perform specific functions, especially biological and pharmacological functions. We use both computational and experimental approaches to explore the connection among molecular structure, dynamics and function.
How does your research impact the general public/what does it mean for the general population?
The insights gained help us to design potent and specific drugs for therapies on cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Our aims are to yield novel drugs for targeted and personalized medicine; to lower required dosage, reduce side-effects and overcome drug resistance.
Why are you passionate about this/these subjects?
At a fundamental scientific level, molecules are units of everything, be it physical or biological worlds. I love to understand the molecular connections to matter and energy, life and death. At a practical level, I love to see our research yield new drugs for better disease management for people to have a better quality of life.
What do you love about Ohio State?
Ohio State is a “Microcosmos”. You can learn any subject, facilitate research via diverse collaborations, and meet different types of interesting people.
What do you love about Columbus?
Columbus is just the right size for me, not too big or too small. It has the cosmopolitan flavor yet has small town tranquility; it’s a quality place to raise a family.
Apart from your research, what are some of your other passions in life?
My family and I love to ski and travel. I also like to play basketball and am an avid reader.
