Overall, the goals of my research program are to better understand the pathogenesis of cardiovascular complications of metabolic diseases, and to study myocardial glucose metabolism and fuel selection associated with heart disease. In particular, diabetes, a widespread health problem, results in high blood sugar and is known to increase the risk of early heart disease (as often manifested by impaired cardiac relaxation) and sudden arrhythmic death. However, there is no real cure. Thus, better understanding of glucose metabolism in the heart could provide novel insights into heart disease, and identify new therapies to improve heart function during diabetes.
