Ryan Schneider Invited to Present His Project at “Highlights in Graduate Student Research” Session |
Ryan Schneider, graduate student in Dr. Dale Hoyt’s group, was invited to present is project, “Role of tumor and host PIN1 status on Lewis Lung Carcinoma Growth” in the special session, “Highlights in Graduate Student Research”, sponsored by the American Society for Investigative Pathology at the 2009 Experimental Biology meeting in New Orleans, LA.

Graduate Student Receives the 2009 Chauncey Leake Memorial Award for Excellence in Pharmacology |
Graduate Associate, Vivek Garg, is co-recipient of the 2009 Chauncey Leake Memorial Award for Excellence in Pharmacology for his manuscript titled, ATP-sensitive K+ Channels are Regulated by Caveolin-enriched Microdomains in Cardiac Myocytes. The award is to be presented February 20, 2009 at the Chauncey Leake Award for Excellence in Pharmacology Seminar by Arnold Schwartz, Ph.D., DSci presenting The Role of Calcium in the Normal and Failing Heart. The other recipients are Hua Wei and Chad Groer, Graduate Associates, College of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology.

Pharmacology Professor Receives Award for Distinguished Teaching in BSPS |
The Division of Pharmacology is pleased to announce that Nicole Cartwright
Kwiek, Ph.D. received the Award for Distinguished Teaching in BSPS, 2008.
This award is determined by voting by the ~500 students in the
undergraduate bachelors in pharmaceutical sciences major. Nicole will be
honored at the BSPS Graduation Luncheon in June.
Nicole was appointed as Clinical Assistant Professor for the Divisions of
Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry & Pharmacognosy, and Assistant
Director of Educational Outreach for the College of Pharmacy in 2007. Dr.
Kwiek began her academic pursuit with a B.S. in Biochemistry from Ohio
University in 2000, and she finished her Ph.D. in Pharmacology at Duke
University in 2005 under Dr. Timothy Haystead. Dr. Kwiek was a RISE
Fellow (Raising Interest in Science Education) from 2005-2007 at Duke, and
her current research focuses on innovative programming to interest young
students in science. She is preparing to teach an inaugural summer course
for high school students entitled "Pills, Potions, and Poisons", to be
held on July 7-18, 2008.

Graduate Students Win Travel Awards to Annual Meeting |
Two graduate students from the division of Pharmacology have been honored with travel awards recently. Tongzheng Liu, in Dr. D. Hoyt's group, has won a Graduate Student Travel Award to the annual meeting of the American Society for Experimental Biology and Therapeutics at Experimental Biology, 2008 in San Diego, CA.
The award is for his presentation, "Post-transcriptional regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) by Protein Interacting with Never in Mitosis Gene A-1 (PIN1) in murine aortic endothelial cells" by Tongzheng Liu, Rostislav Likhotvorik, Yongcheng Huang, Lakhu Keshvara, and Dale G. Hoyt
Also, Rachel Stevens, in Dr. D. Hoyt’s group, has won a Graduate Student Travel
Award for the annual meeting of the American Society for Experimental
Biology and Therapeutics at Experimental Biology, 2008 in San Diego, CA.
The award is for her presentation, “Integrin engagement reduces APE1
co-immunoprecipitation with XRCC1 in hydrogen peroxide-treated murine lung
endothelial cells” by Rachel Stevens and Dale G. Hoyt.

Dr. McKay honored as AAAS Fellow |

Professor Dennis McKay, of the division of Pharmacology, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. McKay received this honor for his distinguished contributions to the understanding of nicotinic receptor expression and trafficking, and for exemplary commitment to the teaching of science.
This year, AAAS elevated 471 of its members to the rank of fellow, a designation that honors efforts toward advancing science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. The organization recognized 15 Ohio State Faculty members this year for their outstanding accomplishments in their respective academic disciplines, as decided by their peers. This is the fourth time in the last five years that Ohio State has led country in having the most faculty chosen as fellows of AAAS.

The Division of Pharmacology is pleased to announce the Joint Faculty Appointment of Associate Professor, Mark A. Gerhardt, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Gerhardt began his academic pursuit here at The College of Pharmacy with a B.S., Pharmacy in 1986. He earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1992 from the University of Michigan where he also achieved his M.D. with distinction in research that same year. Dr. Gerhardt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University Medical Center since 1998 where he has served as the Anesthesiology Residency Program Director, 2002-2003. The housestaff awarded him with the 2003, "Carrying the Weight Award" for outstanding contributions to the residency program. He has also earned numerous teaching awards including Teacher of the Year, 2000-01 and 2001-02, and the 2002 Excellence in Teaching Award. Please join us in welcoming an outstanding addition to our Faculty.
