Education

  • PhD Pharmacology, Duke University, Durham, NC 2005
  • BS Biochemistry, Ohio University, Athens, OH 2000

Areas of Interest

  • Pharmacology education
  • Community educational outreach
  • College/school partnerships
  • Innovative science curricula development

I am interested in improving science education through novel curricular and outreach initiatives. Pharmacology topics (i.e., how both medicinal and drugs of abuse work) provide a provocative, relatable platform by which to engage students of all ages in basic science. As such, I teach courses at the college and high school levels in the context of pharmacology, providing both an interesting and tangible connection between science and the “real-world”. My other projects include: (1) forming a novel partnership between local schools and the College of Pharmacy, (2) connecting undergraduate students in the College with the community (i.e. service learning), and (3) developing/evaluating innovative high school science curricula.

Courses Taught

  • Pharmacy 461: Biomedicinal Chemistry. Fundamentals of biological chemistry for the study of pharmaceutical sciences.

  • Pharmacy 473: Therapeutic Frontiers. Discussion of recent developments in one or more areas of pharmacology.

  • Pharmacy 481: Pharmacology Laboratory. Laboratory experiences in studying the effects of drugs and their mechanisms of action.

  • Pharmacy 750: Pharmacology IV. The fourth in a six-course sequence providing a comprehensive study of the therapeutic effects, pharmacodynamics, mechanistic actions, and toxicological effects of important drug classes.
