The major focus of the Master of Science Program in Health-System Pharmacy Administration to educate and train pharmacists to conceptualize, plan, coordinate and evaluate pharmaceutical care in organized health care settings. In order to accomplish this goal, the program is directed toward providing students with the skills necessary for: (a) providing professional services to the patient and members of the health care team; (b) understanding the managerial and financial responsibilities in health system pharmacies; and (c) designing strategies to cope with the changing health system pharmacy and health care environments.
The Master of Science Program in Health-System Pharmacy Administration is offered as a combined graduate study-residency program in cooperation with four health care institutions having nine residencies accredited by ASHP: Children's Hospital (one residency), Grant Medical Center (one residency), Mount Carmel Medical Center (one residency), The Ohio State University Medical Center (five residencies); and Riverside Methodist Hospital (one residency).
The program begins July 1 each year and ends on June 30, twenty-four months later. During the academic years, the residents devote half-time to residency training and half-time to graduate study. Full-time residency in the hospital's department of pharmacy is required during the quarter breaks and during each summer of the two-year program. A stipend for the first and second years of residency is provided to the resident by the hospital. The appointment also carries a waiver of University fees (tuition) or an increase in the stipend to cover such fees in the academic program. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the Master of Science degree will be conferred by the University and a Certificate of Residency will be awarded by the hospital providing the residency training.
The masters program in Health-System Pharmacy Administration requires no thesis, but each student undertakes a supervised research project investigating an issue relevant to hospital pharmacy or pharmacy practice. Each student must complete a minimum of 49 hours of graduate coursework and perform satisfactorily on a minimum four-hour written and verbal comprehensive examination.
The residency training program serves as a viable laboratory experience to complement and apply to actual practice situations the knowledge gained in the graduate study courses. As a practicing residency pharmacist, the student is given the opportunity to develop competence in all facets of comprehensive pharmaceutical services including professional, scientific, administrative, technical, as well as clinical practice.
Our program has affiliations with 5 Columbus area hospitals. To determine which of the 5 hospitals best match your interests, you should speak directly with the residency coordinators at those sites.
Additionally, each of the 5 residency sites has unique application requirements that you need to fulfill. Information should be obtained directly from those sites.
