Appointment/StipendGraduate students are usually supported by a half-time appointment as a teaching associate or a research associate. A half-time appointment will require up to 20 hours per work at assigned teaching or research duties. The appointment is designed to provide you with an invaluable teaching or research experience that will complement and reinforce your classroom activities and will be an important component of your professional development.
The value of the academic tuition and fees that are provided with 50% GA appointment is as follows.
Ohio Resident.
Academic tuition and fees,
@ $2,009. per quarter. $8,036.00*
Nonresident of Ohio.
Academic tuition and fees,
@ $5,204. per quarter. $20,816.00*
*Note that all appointments for three consecutive quarters (such as a regular academic year consisting of autumn, winter, and spring quarters) carry with them an automatic fourth quarter tuition and fee authorization. The benefit to the student is thus four quarters of tuition and fees.
The only fee in addition to those included above that must be paid by a student on a Graduate Associate appointment is the $9.00 per academic quarter of enrollment for the COTA bus pass. International students must also purchase health insurance.
The Student Health Services component of the General Fee at The Ohio State University is part of the tuition and fee authorization that Graduate Associates receive with their appointments. This fee, which covers about 40% of the total operating expenses of the Wilce Student Health Center, serves in place of the mandatory prepaid health fee at many other universities. All regularly enrolled students are eligible to use the health service and do not need to purchase Student Health Insurance to use the health center. Student Health Services at The Ohio State University is a fully accredited, outpatient health facility.
The health fee, which is included as part of the GA package, covers all office visits at Student Health Services, including general practitioners (family practitioners, internists, pediatricians, gynecologists, and nurse practitioners), some specialists (general surgeon, allergist, preventive medicine specialist, optometrist, orthopedic surgeon, and sports medicine specialists), and various support services (health education, nutritionist, travel clinic, immunization and injection services, triage nurse, and other basic nursing services). The Preventive Medicine Program provides health screening and verifications for all incoming international students, as well as for professional students in the Colleges of Allied Medical Professions, Dental Hygiene, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine, and for students in the Speech and Hearing Program.
Not included in the student fee are costs associated with dental exams, laboratory work, x-rays, physical therapy, pharmaceuticals, supplies, and medical & dental procedures performed. Most of these charges are covered under the Student Health Insurance plan, which students may purchase to supplement the services available without charge at Student Health Services.
Option 2: Elect to be exempt from this retirement withholding. You may only elect this option if you meet certain criteria which includes being enrolled for a minimum of 9 hours during autumn, winter and spring quarters and 7 hours during summer quarter AND have paid your General & Instructional Fees. Note that this election is irrevocable once made, and by doing so, you will not be eligible for the benefits listed in Option 1.
It is important to note that Ohio public institutions do not participate in the federal Social Security system, other than contributions to the Medicare Hospital insurance fund (Medicare Part A). The Medicare contribution rate is currently 1.45% of earnings.
