Preventive Health Care Activities Operation Immunization

Academy of Student Pharmacists
Faculty Advisor: Christine Murphy

Pharmacy interns have been involved in bringing immunization awareness to the central Ohio community. The interns and pharmacy faculty have worked with Life Care Alliance, the Franklin County Health Department, The Columbus Health Department as well as community pharmacies and retail outlets to educate people about issues such as the benefits of childhood immunizations and annual flu shots. They worked with the health departments making calls to parents to remind them of immunizations that their children needed and addressed the parents immunization related questions and concerns. The interns also spent time promoting awareness of the benefits of flu shots and educating patients about the risks and benefits of the vaccine.

Operation Diabetes

Academy of Student Pharmacists
Faculty Advisor: Jennifer Rodis

Operation Diabetes is a student-run national effort supported by the Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP). Operation Diabetes creates the opportunity for pharmacy students to conduct diabetes screenings throughout Central Ohio. ASP has partnered with the Central Ohio Diabetes Association (CODA) for student training and blood glucose testing supplies. To date, 64 Ohio State pharmacy students have received blood glucose testing training by CODA. Since December 2003, four blood glucose screenings have been conducted at various sites, including The Ohio State University’s Student Union, the Dublin Recreation Center in Dublin, Ohio, and the Hilliard Recreation Center in Hilliard, Ohio. The screenings are open to any adults at least 18 years of age. In conjunction with the finger stick blood glucose screenings, blood pressure screening is also conducted at the events. Thus, community members have the option of checking both their blood glucose and their blood pressure at these Operation Diabetes screenings. As of May 2004, approximately 170 individuals have received blood glucose screenings at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy ASP Operation Diabetes events.
