Charitable Pharmacy of Columbus Ohio

Undergraduate student members of the Pre-Pharmacy Club assist the Charitable Pharmacy staff with inventory management. The volunteer schedule is coordinated by an officer of the Pre-Pharmacy Club. Doctor of Pharmacy students engage in experiential rotations at the Charitable Pharmacy. The pharmacy is also a training site for the college's Ambulatory/Community Residency Program.
The Charitable Pharmacy of Central Ohio, Inc. opened in February 2010. The Pharmacy's primary purpose is to create a bridge pharmacy to increase access to affordable prescription medications for low-income, uninsured, and underinsured individuals who experience gaps in their insurance coverage and/or challenges in accessing medications. The Pharmacy provides counseling and education to ensure that clients take medications properly and are aware of clinics and programs that can help them access continuing medical care or find a medical home.

Free Clinics
General Statement
Student pharmacists enrolled in the Ohio State's Doctor of Pharmacy Program assist physicians, prescribers, and nurses with the care of Ohio citizens and immigrants seeking medical care at Central Ohio Free Clinics. The patients served are culturally diverse, without health insurance and may or may not be employed. Some of the patients are homeless.
The student pharmacists volunteer schedules are coordinated by faculty or a leader in a student organization. Student pharmacists work under the supervision of volunteer pharmacist preceptors, with both serving as an agent of the physicians and prescribers. Pharmacy services vary for each clinic – examples include the following:
- Obtaining medication histories
- Performing medication reconciliation
- Providing drug information
- Dispensing (Note: acting as an agent of the physician/prescriber)
- Referral to Charitable Pharmacy of Columbus, Ohio
- Assisting patients with applications for manufacturers medication assistance programs
- Providing medication counseling to patients
- Providing health and medication-related education

Helping Hands Health and Wellness Center

In 2007, the Helping Hands Health and Wellness Center, Inc. opened. Patients come to the clinic from over 21 zip codes throughout the Central Ohio region. Patients range in age from 18-64 years old. The majority of the patients have graduated from high school or college. Over 67% of the patients are at or below the 0-100% of the poverty level. The clinic provides services to patients who are at or below the 200% poverty level. Patient ethnicity is 46% African-American, 45% White, and 9% Hispanic, Asian or Somalian.
Clinic services include routine medical examinations including work and school related physicals, gynecological examinations, diabetes and hypertension screenings and treatment, laboratory services, prescriptions services, health instructions, referrals to specialty clinics and social service agencies and spiritual guidance.

Grace-in-the-City Hardin Clinic

Provides medical and spiritual support for the Linden community. The clinic is open Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The professional staff includes volunteer doctors, nurses and pharmacists. A prayer team is also available for patients. Clinic services include routine medical examinations for persons without healthcare coverage. The clinic does not provide emergency or surgical care. Minimal lab and diagnostic testing is available.

New Life Methodist Health and Wellness Center

The Health and Wellness Center is open each Sunday morning from 7:00 - 9:00 AM for anyone who needs to see a physician. Services include free basic medical services, blood pressure monitoring, foot problems, various infections, and other common illnesses. Patients are also referred to specialists and to the hospitals, when appropriate. The patients are served by a team of volunteer physicians, nurses, pharmacists and prayer partners. No appointment is necessary.
The Center is located just to the west of the church. Patients enter the church from the East end of the building and proceed to the lower level where you will be welcomed and given information as to how to get needed medical care.

Physicians Care Connection (Formerly the Physicians Free Clinic)

The Physicians Care Connection (PCC), an affiliate organization of the Columbus Medical Association, was created in March of 1993. The PCC operates a Monday evening walk-in episodic primary care clinic that provides urgent care, specialty care and support services for Franklin County residents at 200% of the Federal Poverty Level without health insurance. PCC does not serve as a medical home but acts a “gateway” in linking patients to Community Health Centers (includes federally qualified health centers, hospital based and other non-profit primary care practices) in Franklin County. The PCC also serves as a valued training site for university medical, nursing, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, and nutrition students.

The Clinic at Faith Mission

Providing medical care for the poor and uninsured is an ongoing nationwide problem. Faith Mission responded to the medical needs of the homeless population by establishing The Clinic at Faith Mission. Local health care volunteers staff the medical clinic on Thursday evenings at 6PM. The clinic also offers a variety of services at no cost to shelter residents. This includes, but is not limited to, dental, pediatric, vision and general medical services.
