The College of Pharmacy at the Ohio State University and Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Ohio University have a long history of cooperation for the provision of admissions information to OU students interested in graduate-professional or graduate-research programs in pharmacy. This inter-institutional collaboration was enhanced through a Course Development Grant from OSU’s Office of Continuing Education for a teleconferenced “Introduction to Pharmacy” course Spring Quarter 2008. The course was designed to expose students to the history, development, current scope of practice, educational requirements, ethical foundations, regulation, contemporary issues and career opportunities in the profession of pharmacy. An innovative “Introduction to Pharmacy” web site was developed for use in the course including digital “Pharmacists’ Stories” to help students learn more about professional practice. This web site is also available to the public:
(see: http://www.pharmacy.ohio-state.edu/academics/introduction-to-pharmacy/index.cfm).
Twenty-eight students at OU’s Athens campus engaged in this course along with a small section of students at Ohio State.
The course was taught by Dr. Kenneth Hale, Assistant Dean at Ohio State’s College of Pharmacy. Dr. Mark McMills, Associate Professor in OU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was co-instructor. The course received good evaluations from students on both campuses, and the two institutions have agreed to offer the course again Spring Quarter 2009. OSU’s Office of Continuing Education has renewed the Course Development Grant for this purpose. This project has led to discussions of other possible educational partnerships relating to degree programs as well as outreach and engagement collaborations.
