Robert R. Ruffolo Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Robert R. RuffoloApril 29, 2009 – Robert R. Ruffolo, Jr, PhD, DSc, DEng, will visit The Ohio State University to receive the College of Pharmacy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the College of Pharmacy Annual Alumni Awards Banquet, May 8, 2009.  Dr. Ruffolo received his BS in Pharmacy Degree summa cum laude with Distinction in 1973, and his PhD degree in Pharmacology in 1976, both from The Ohio State University, College of Pharmacy.   

Dr. Ruffolo is the Retired President of Research & Development for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Corporate Senior Vice President of Wyeth.  During his career in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ruffolo played a significant role in the discovery and/or development of a number of marketed products, including several drugs for the treatment of congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, hypertension and Parkinson’s Disease.  Dr. Ruffolo has received numerous prestigious awards for his work, including the 2008 Scrip Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2008 Discoverer’s Award, a number of Tribute Citations and many scientific recognitions.  In 1989 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from The Ohio State University. In October 2008, the College of Pharmacy dedicated the Ruffolo Lecture Hall in Parks Hall, made possible by a generous donation from Dr. and Mrs. Ruffolo.

On May 8 the College will present the College of Pharmacy Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Ruffolo for his contributions to drug discovery and the science and academic communities.  As part of the celebration he will speak to students, faculty and staff on the pharmaceutical industry, research and development and the relationship between the industry, academia, research institutes and the government in the development of new drugs.  As a capstone to the event, Dr. Ruffolo will give a talk entitled “My Journey from OSU to the Pharmaceutical Industry and Back Again to OSU”
