Dr. Kinghorn Honored as AAAS Fellow

Dr. A. Douglas Kinghorn, Jack L. Beal Professor and Chair in Natural Products Chemistry and Pharmacognosy at the College of Pharmacy, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is one of 17 new AAAS Fellows recognized at Ohio State in 2006, for a total of 127 altogether at the university. Each year the Council elects members whose “efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished”. The honor of being elected a Fellow of AAAS began in 1874 and is acknowledged with a certificate and a rosette. Dr. Kinghorn is being honored for his “distinguished contributions in the isolation and molecular characterization of biologically active plant secondary metabolites and for service as Editor of the Journal of Natural Products”. He has discovered numerous biologically active small molecules from plants, in research projects on potential anticancer agents, cancer chemopreventives, oral antimicrobials, and natural sweeteners. Dr. Kinghorn has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Natural Products since 1994, a monthly publication that since 1996 has been co-published by the American Chemical Society and the American Society of Pharmacognosy.

Dr. Kinghorn will be recognized at a ceremony in San Francisco on Saturday February 17, 2007, during the AAAS Fellows Forum, a part of the Association’s Annual Meeting.
