History of the College of Pharmacy

The College of Pharmacy was established in 1895 (originally founded as a School of Pharmacy in 1885). A three-year pharmacy degree program was implemented in 1886, and a four-year baccalaureate program in 1925. A five-year course of study leading to the B.S. in Pharmacy was instituted in 1948. Graduate programs at the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy levels were established in 1939, and a two-year post-B.S. in Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum in 1981. The Entry-Level Doctor of Pharmacy (ELPD) program enrolled its first class in 1998, and the Non-Traditional PharmD (NTPD) program was initiated in 2000. Our Bachelor of Science in the Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) program began enrolling students in 1998.

The College currently offers the following degree programs:

    • Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy
    • Pharmaceutics
    • Pharmacology
    • Pharmacy Administration

Combined degree offerings include PharmD/MS, PharmD/PhD, PharmD/MBA, and PharmD/MPH. Pharmacy practice and specialty residency programs are available in a variety of focus areas including institutional and ambulatory care emphases. Post-doctoral research fellowships are offered for PharmD as well as PhD graduates.
