Academic Practice Residency

with Emphasis in Ambulatory Care

MissionOur mission is to promote and support careers in academic pharmacy practice by providing advanced-level post-graduate training and formative experiences in a college of pharmacy environment.  The program will foster the participants’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of classroom-based teaching, research and scholarship, and clinical practice/service; and serve to enhance awareness of pharmacy education as a desirable career pathway.

Goals:  The residency program shall enable the resident to:

  1. Participate in education of doctor of pharmacy students and pharmacy practice residents, including but not limited to:
    1. classroom-based teaching in an academic environment;
    2. participating in course development and quality improvement activities;
    3. developing, implementing, and assessing effectiveness of specific teaching strategies to accomplish desired learning goals;
    4. participate in program-level assessment to achieve specific curricular outcomes.
  1. Enhance teaching abilities through study of educational pedagogy, self- and peer-evaluation, and formative experiences; this may occur in a variety of teaching areas, including:
    1. leading didactic, problem- and case-based learning, and class discussion;
    2. delivering distance and/or web-based education;
    3. participating in clinical teaching environments (ie. experiential teaching).
    4. planning and presenting portions of the  College of Pharmacy Annual Teaching Workshop
    5. planning and presenting selected discussions in the College of Pharmacy Teaching Roundtables series.
  1. Develop awareness of the scholarship of teaching, and contribute to the profession through:
    1. researching, planning, implementing, and evaluating a major education project that includes qualitative and/or quantitative outcome measurement;
    2. presenting the project at an appropriate national pharmacy meeting, including the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Annual Meeting;
    3. preparing a manuscript and submitting it for publication in an appropriate professional journal with an emphasis in education.
  1. Participate in medication therapy management and professional practice and management activities in an ambulatory care setting, through:
    1. providing direct patient care;
    2. developing and/or enhancing a new practice or service.
    3. providing health-related education to patients and their caregivers;
    4. developing and delivering educational programs for other healthcare practitioners.
  1. Contribute to the teaching, research, and pharmacy practice missions of a college of pharmacy through service; these activities may include, but not be limited to
    1. participating in appropriate committees or working groups, to further the educational and professional objectives of the college;
    2. interacting with students and residents, including advising for individuals and for student organizations or programs if appropriate;
    3. coordinating an academic enhancement program and collaborating with others in the University community for faculty/staff enrichment.

Residency Structure:

Direct teaching-related activities — 50%

*All residents are placed with a primary preceptor in the College of Pharmacy; A teaching mentor (primary or adjunct preceptor) will also be assigned as appropriate.

Pharmacy practice in ambulatory care — 35%

**All residents will choose a primary practice site, with a practice mentor (adjunct preceptor) as appropriate

Scholarship (including the academic research project)  — 10%

Service responsibilities —  5%
