Cholesterol Management Service Outcomes

Results of the multicenter Project IMPACT:Hyperlipidemia study showed that:

  • 62.5% of patients reached their LDL goal
  • 90% of patients reported medication compliance
  • 93% expressed satisfaction with the care provided by the pharmacist

Our local results with 33 patients showed that:

  • 69% were within 10% of their LDL goal
  • Patients achieved 100% medication persistence and 96% medication compliance

Persistence for this study was defined as a patient who started on medication and remained on medication through their last visit in the study. Compliance was assessed by patient self-report based on number of missed doses and refill timing. Noncompliant was defined as any patient who missed 5 or more doses or missed refilling a medication by more than 5 days. Prior to our service, 16 of 33 patients had previously been in a corporate cholesterol management program. This corporate program was part of a local company’s wellness program for employees. Patients received cholesterol screenings and information on diet and exercise. In that program, 13 of 16 patients consistently had total cholesterol concentrations >200 mg/dL over a three year period.

After 4 months in Project IMPACT:

  • 8 of them achieved their LDL goal through therapeutic lifestyle changes
  • 4 had significantly improved
  • 4 patients were referred to their physicians for lipid lowering therapy
